AllTheseThingsIveDone.com - The MediaCast

 MediaCast Image

Hurrah! This site is less than a week old and already I’m pleased to announce the MediaCast is online. To subscribe directly in iTunes click here, while if you’d rather just visit the feed and download things on a casual basis click here.

Up there now you’ll find an interview I did with Delirious? lead singer Martin Smith about porverty, the social injustice bandwagon and CompassionArt. This can be downloaded in either the semi-skimmed iPod (and bandwidth) friendly format, or the glorious full fat 720p HD Apple TV format.

Also up online is a PDF containing the information I gave at Ignite for lent.

Just a few notes about the MediaCast. To view the video files you’ll need either iTunes or QuickTime. To open the PDF files you’ll need either Preview (Mac) or Adobe Reader (Mac/Windows).

The $25,000 Question

MoneyOn one of my many trips into the world of Google Reader I was presented with the lifechurch.tv blog. I found this interesting as they’ve already gone done some of the routes I’d like to look at with ACC. However, an article that really caught my eye was about Church planting. Specifically, if you had $25,000 (approximately £12,500 and I’m not American, honest!) to start a new Church or, I’m guessing, a fresh expression of an existing Church.

So, here’s how I’d spend my “imaginary” $25,000.

Firstly, an interactive web portal that can connects Church “membership”.

Secondly, a good youth worker who could come on board part time.

Thirdly, a small, loud but transportable PA system. Preferably with one wireless microphone.

Fourthly, sort out a partnership with a small to medium sized Coffee shop. Which I’d already expressed I’d do in this post.

I don’t really have a clue what it’d look like. Or, how it would work. And it opens up certain questions. Should Church be marketed? Or planned? Should Church be completely spontaneous? Should we, as Christians, use worldly values and techniques to spread our message?

I’d like to know your opinions. Where would you spend the money? What are your thoughts on my questions?

Oh, and if you happen to have $25,000 - don’t give it to me. Though I do know where it could be used…

Firework Worship

Firework Display

Earlier this week I decided that instead of watching mindless TV before going to sleep, I’d sit and read some more of a book that I started back in the summer. It, unsurprisingly, is another travel book; This one documents the journey of the “Kumars at 42” star Sanjeev Bhaskar round 21st century India. This is, perhaps, not the most comfortable read as there are many references to how the British empire essentially just left India at a whim to fend for itself with no real help.

However in the 60 years that India has been in existence it’s carved out a little niche for itself and for the most part things are on the up. But I digress. In amongst the descriptions of opulent living and abject poverty was one of Hinduism. I found this very interesting because I firmly believe that as Christians we should know and understand and be challenged by other faiths.

As I read on some thoughts really struck me. Particularly regarding worship. At certain times of the year they worship using Fireworks. This, somewhat mind blowing, idea challenged me and really got me thinking. How amazing would it be if we, as Christians, did the same thing? Turn the secular November 5 into a time of year when we let a whole load of fireworks of in praise of God. My reasons behind this? Well, just like fireworks He breaks out of the darkness to offer people hope and a life of enchantment.

Church; Free with your Latte

Starbucks

If you’re reading this blog then you’ve probably read Jon’s blog and you might also have read Rosie’s blog.

Over the last few months Rosie and I have spoken a lot about fresh expressions of Church. And how it could well be possible that the deconstructed church movement may be a truer representation of how the early Church was when Jesus was still in ministry. After all, he took the last, the least and the lost on his journey. You had a group of believers who shared each others lives.

You might be thinking; Yes, but that was 2000 years ago, we can’t possible replicate that. Well no we can’t I think all of us followers can take some important lessons:

  1. Before we can disciple we need to trust and be trusted.

  2. In order to trust and be trusted we need to communicate and spend time with people.

It’s quite possible, nee probable, that there are people in our Churches that we don’t trust. It’s also probable that our Church numbers will have, at best, either stayed still or, at worst, fallen. Maybe it’s time for a fresh expression.

Much has been said about coffee house Alpha that leads to coffee house Church that meets on a Wednesday afternoon because that’s the only time people can make it. These are great but the Bible is pretty clear (though I’m still hunting down a reference) that we need a collected, or as I prefer to term it a united, time each week but Sunday’s were only chosen 300 years ago. It can be any day of the week.

So here’s the experiment (that’s the wrong word, but I can’t think of a better one) I’d love to run:

Take 24 people from several different Churches. Split them into 4 groups so at most they’d only know one other person and let them meet when and where they want (like the above mentioned Starbucks). Give them a Bible topic to cover, ie Jesus and Children (yes, it’s early don’t expect anything mind blowing) and let them discuss it and form there own conclusions. I propose that these groups be called “Refresh Groups”.

That may not look too different from house, or cell, Church groups but where it hinges is it’s relation to the time of united worship. I personally think that our teaching should be done in the aforementioned Refresh Groups. Which means united times can take on a radically different form probably lasting between 60 and 90 minutes. This meeting would contain a time of worship, with no preference to any style, and, initially, an introduction to the study to be done in the refresh group but this would last no more than 10 minutes. This meeting would be called “unite.”
